What does the Quran say about death, the afterlife and this world?

In short

This life is short and the home of the Hereafter is the true life. We were created to worship Allah. Live in this world like a stranger or a traveller: enjoy what is good, but keep your heart on the destination.

یہ زندگی مختصر ہے اور آخرت ہی اصل زندگی ہے۔ دنیا میں اجنبی یا مسافر کی طرح رہیں۔

Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:185 Read in context

كُلُّ نَفْسٍۢ ذَآئِقَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۗ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۖ فَمَن زُحْزِحَ عَنِ ٱلنَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَ ۗ وَمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلْغُرُورِ ﴿185﴾

ہر متنفس کو موت کا مزا چکھنا ہے اور تم کو قیامت کے دن تمہارے اعمال کا پورا پورا بدلا دیا جائے گا۔ تو جو شخص آتش جہنم سے دور رکھا گیا اور بہشت میں داخل کیا گیا وہ مراد کو پہنچ گیا اور دنیا کی زندگی تو دھوکے کا سامان ہے

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

Surah Al-Ankaboot 29:64 Read in context

وَمَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا لَهْوٌۭ وَلَعِبٌۭ ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلدَّارَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ لَهِىَ ٱلْحَيَوَانُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿64﴾

اور یہ دنیا کی زندگی تو صرف کھیل اور تماشہ ہے اور (ہمیشہ کی) زندگی (کا مقام) تو آخرت کا گھر ہے۔ کاش یہ (لوگ) سمجھتے

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

Surah Adh-Dhaariyat 51:56 Read in context

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ ﴿56﴾

اور میں نے جنوں اور انسانوں کو اس لئے پیدا کیا ہے کہ میری عبادت کریں

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

Narrated Mujahid:`Abdullah bin `Umar said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) took hold of my shoulder and said, 'Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler." The sub-narrator added: Ibn `Umar used to say, "If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death

ہم سے علی بن عبداللہ نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا ہم سے محمد بن عبدالرحمٰن ابومنذر طفاوی نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا ہم سے سلیمان اعمش نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا مجھ سے مجاہد نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا ہم سے عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے بیان کیا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے میرا شانہ پکڑ کر فرمایا ”دنیا میں اس طرح ہو جا جیسے تو مسافر یا راستہ چلنے والا ہو۔“ عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما فرمایا کرتے تھے شام ہو جائے تو صبح کے منتظر نہ رہو اور صبح کے وقت شام کے منتظر نہ رہو، اپنی صحت کو مرض سے پہلے غنیمت جانو اور زندگی کو موت سے پہلے۔
