How do I forgive someone who hurt me?

In short

Forgiving is not saying what happened was fine; it is freeing your heart. Allah asks: do you not love that Allah should forgive you? Whoever pardons, Allah raises their honour. You may still protect yourself and set boundaries while you forgive.

معاف کرنا ظلم کو درست کہنا نہیں بلکہ اپنے دل کو آزاد کرنا ہے۔ کیا آپ نہیں چاہتے کہ اللہ آپ کو معاف کرے؟ معاف کرنے والے کی عزت اللہ بڑھاتا ہے۔

Surah An-Noor 24:22 Read in context

وَلَا يَأْتَلِ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْفَضْلِ مِنكُمْ وَٱلسَّعَةِ أَن يُؤْتُوٓا۟ أُو۟لِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينَ وَٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَلْيَعْفُوا۟ وَلْيَصْفَحُوٓا۟ ۗ أَلَا تُحِبُّونَ أَن يَغْفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌ ﴿22﴾

اور جو لوگ تم میں صاحب فضل (اور صاحب) وسعت ہیں، وہ اس بات کی قسم نہ کھائیں کہ رشتہ داروں اور محتاجوں اور وطن چھوڑ جانے والوں کو کچھ خرچ پات نہیں دیں گے۔ ان کو چاہیئے کہ معاف کردیں اور درگزر کریں۔ کیا تم پسند نہیں کرتے کہ خدا تم کو بخش دے؟ اور خدا تو بخشنے والا مہربان ہے

And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah, and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Surah Ash-Shura 42:40 Read in context

وَجَزَٰٓؤُا۟ سَيِّئَةٍۢ سَيِّئَةٌۭ مِّثْلُهَا ۖ فَمَنْ عَفَا وَأَصْلَحَ فَأَجْرُهُۥ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ ﴿40﴾

اور برائی کا بدلہ تو اسی طرح کی برائی ہے۔ مگر جو درگزر کرے اور (معاملے کو) درست کردے تو اس کا بدلہ خدا کے ذمے ہے۔ اس میں شک نہیں کہ وہ ظلم کرنے والوں کو پسند نہیں کرتا

And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.

Surah Al-A'raaf 7:199 Read in context

خُذِ ٱلْعَفْوَ وَأْمُرْ بِٱلْعُرْفِ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ ﴿199﴾

(اے محمدﷺ) عفو اختیار کرو اور نیک کام کرنے کا حکم دو اور جاہلوں سے کنارہ کرلو

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:Charity does not decrease wealth, no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honor, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises his status

حضرت ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے روایت کی کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا : " صدقے نے مال میں کبھی کوئی کمی نہیں کی اور معاف کرنے سے اللہ تعالیٰ بندے کو عزت ہی میں بڑھاتا ہے اور کوئی شخص ( صرف اور صرف ) اللہ کی خاطر تواضع ( انکسار ) اختیار نہیں کرتا مگر اللہ تعالیٰ اس کا مقام بلند کر دیتا ہے ۔
